Intent to Participate We will appreciate very much if you will let us know when you think you may enter the competition, by sending a message to iosesc06@openfoundry.org. The information will help us plan better throughout the competition.

5000-Word Proposals in English Selections in the preliminary round will be on the basis of descriptions of software products and development and quality assurance plans contained in your 5000-word proposals. Please upload your proposal on the submission page.

Each proposal must include

  • Title and a 250-word overview of your submission
  • E-mail address, postal address and telephone number of each member of your team
  • A conspicuous and appropriate notice stating the licensing policies of your submission
  • The proposal body

We suggest that the body of your proposal addresses the following aspects:

  • Utility and importance – User scenarios illustrating how your product will be used and why it is important will help us to better appreciate the product.
  • Novel features and technical innovations – A summary of distinguishing features of your product and new approaches to its design and implementation is a way to highlight them.
  • Performance, dependability, etc. – Please tell us what quality objectives you will aim to accomplish and to what extension your final submissions can achieve the objectives.
  • Architecture and design – A clear description of the structure and components of your product is an essential part of documentation.
  • Implement plan – In addition to describing new code you plan to write, you can state in this part of the proposal what existing open source software components you plan to use in your product and how your code will integrate with them.
  • Choice of platform and development environment – This part describes your choices of platform and development tools and reasons for the choices. If your choice is MontaVista Linux, please include alternative choices.
  • Debugging, testing and other quality assurance plans – Since quality assurance is one of the judging criteria with 20% weight, you will want to develop your debugging and testing strategies and plans as fully as possible from start along with the design and implementation of your product.

Product and Test Code and Documentation Contestants in the final round will submit for judging

  • Your new code and revised code (if any), together with a Makefile.
  • Documentation – The final version can be an extension of your proposal. Be sure to include clear statements of hardware and operating system requirements and clear instruction on building and installing your software, including a complete list of tools needed for the purpose.
  • Test cases and codes if any.
  • A video clip demonstrating how your product works – Please do not disassemble the demo after submission since you may be asked to repeat the demo for the judges.
    More details on the video clip for the final submission:

  1. 15 - 20 mins demonstration video is much preferred. Please contact us before uploading your file if your video is longer than 20 mins or your file is larger than 1Gb.
  2. The video format should be in AVI or MPEG.
  3. Use your topic name as the video file name.
  4. All teams should upload the video file to the FTP server. (The IP, account and passward will be sent to all teams by email.)
  5. The FTP account will be valid before 22:00 GMT+8, June 14.

We encourage you to use an open source software foundry to host your submission. Open source software foundries typically provide free-of-charge download repository, as well as resource for managing projects and code, tracking issues and facilitating communication. You can find URL of well known foundries in Resource Catalog. If you use a software foundry to host your submission, you can make your submission by e-mailing the URL of your project to iosesc06@openfoundry.org. Please be sure that we will be able to find all the required items there. If you do not use a software foundry, you can submit your entry in a gzipped tar file via e-mail to the above e-mail address.

Journal paper To compete for the best paper award, you must submit of a paper based on your proposal to the software publication track of Journal of Information Science and Engineering. You can editorial policy and submission instruction of the journal at http://www.iis.sinica.edu.tw/JISE/
